The years of the Pop Warner

In 1981, EC participates to the "Secrets Police Men Ball", an annual show organized by Amnesty International in London. It is the occasion for a meeting at the top with Jeff Beck, which we can find on "Secrets Police Men Other Ball" CD and videos released in 1982.
After two compilations "Time Pieces" and "Time Pieces 2", EC comes back in January 1983 with an original material album "Money and Cigarettes" in which we can find the presence of Ry Cooder, Roger Hawkins and Donald Dun.

The EC goes on a series of concerts for the benefit of his friend Ronnie Lane who fights against multiple sclerosis. We will note the presence during this concerts of two other old Yardbirds : Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. After this, he goes back in records sessions. Excepted two tracks, it is Phil Collins who produces "Behind the Sun" in 1985 with Lindsay Bugingham and Fleetwood Mac. It is again Phil Collins who, with the association of Tom Dowd, realizes "August" in November 1986. This is his first album at Warner (before he was at Polydor) and the radio broadcasting sound. Tina Turner sings on two tracks, "Hold on" where she is in the choral, and "Tearing us apart" where she does a duet with EC.

It is also at this moment that Fender creates and commercializes a model named "Eric Clapton". This guitar is the reproduction of Blackie, the black strato tuned by EC with which he plays since the end of the 60's.

In 1989, the collaboration of Phil Collins gets stronger. EC participates to the recording of the "Buster" where Phil Collins is the movie star, soundtrack and help Phil for his fourth solo album "Bad seriously". As a result of that, we find Phil Collins with Daryl Lall, George Harrison, Robert Cray and Roman and Ronan on "Journey Man" (November 1989). The same year EC makes a very special and interesting experience : the king of Swaziland invites him to produce in Africa. In Mozambic, he arrives on a ground virgin of rock musicians and plays for 100,000 people.

In October 1991, EC was at a very good place on the tribute album for John Lennon with the Tooping To Roses and "Mother Songs". Always in October 1991, the live album "24 nights"is commercialized and reflects the last concerts given by EC in London at the Royal Albert Hall in 1990 and 1991. EC is accompanied by different formations of musicians : his usual quatuor, a 9 musicians band and even a philharmonic orchestra : the National Philharmonic Orchestra. It was an unforgettable experience for him :

"It is a fabulous experience that to be there, surrounded by acoustic instruments, at the center of the matter, this air, because it is what's going on with this army of violoncellos, violins, basses. When they play, they move the air, it is something you can almost touch, feel as well as listen. Once it's gone, that the orchestra and my band with its electronic instruments play together, if you let you take, you loose all identification, it becomes a huge machine which take off, it is a wonderful experience."
