On March 20, 1991, Conor, EC's son, tragically died by falling
from the 53rd stage of a building in New York, he was only four and half. After
this tragedy, EC is backed by his friends, George Harrison for instance. So
he works hard with the idea to give a tribute to his son.
"My next album will be composed of songs for my son. I am working on it.
I compose and collect small songs for the memory of my son. I don't know of
it will work, but I will do my best for this. It's a project I would like to
carry through."
In December 1991, EC is in Japan in order to accompany George Harrison
in his tour. He convinced this ex-Beatles to fight his natural timidity and
to go back on stage after 17 year of absence. But the experience doesn't work
as it should. I should have to be the beginning of a world tour, and it will
stay in the frontiers of the Empire of the Rising Sun. It will also give the
double album "George Harrisson Live in Japan" in July 1992.
The songs inspired by his son, Conor, are released in February 1992. They are three : a blues of Willy Dickson and two original compositions. They figure on the original soundtrack of "Rush" signed by EC. "Tears in heaven" is an touching ballad, written with the help of Willy Jemmings. This song becomes the second hit in the USA on March 28, 1992.
"In writing Tears in heaven,
my mind was : Will I see him again one day ? It wasn't : I can't anymore, I
feel ravaged; there are no these words in my song, there is not a word which
involves the sadness. I ask the question : Will I see you again one day ? I
think it is the question that everybody has when they lost loved people. It
translates the anguish I had to never see my son again. But there is no sadness
because I am sure one day I will see it again."
Even if it has a bitter taste, "Tears
in heaven" boosts EC's career. Now everything he touches becomes gold
or platinum. In June 1992, EC signs with Michael Kamen the original soundtrack
of "L'arme fatale 3" : 8 instrumentals
and 2 songs . "Run away train"
sung by Elton John and "It's
probably me" interpreted by Sting and EC. It is one of the big success
of the year on the European continent.
