John Mayall
and The BluesBreakers
|

As EC wanted to stay loyal to his roots, he will join John Mayall and his BluesBreakers, for a purer blues, with which EC asserts himself as a real master of guitar. He will work with them for 15 months and will record an album : "John Mayall and the BluesBreakers with Eric Clapton" " in 1966. On the track "Ramblin' on my mind", a reprise from Robert Johnson, he makes his official beginnings as singer; while at the other side of the Atlantic, for a young black guitarist still unknown, he will become an idol (and later his friend) : he was Jimi Hendrix.

Although his employed for £20 a week, he can take benefit of the wonderful blues disc collection of John Mayall. In the London clubs, his concerts with John Mayall are scorching. EC becomes a guitar hero. It is at this moment that appear on the walls of the British capital Clapton is God. The formula as flattering could it be don't swell its vanity, but establishes above all the essential dogma of all his mythology.
" It makes me all the same. Of course I saw it as a compliment but I found
he thing stupid. I didn't understand why people could take it seriously. It
was very sympathetic and at the same time ridiculous."
With his Gibson Les Paul, he unveils progressively his solo abilities which
will make us crazy.
