Delanney and Bonnie |
In September, EC s in Toronto where he played with John Lennon. They playes everal old classical blues as "Blues Suede Shoes","Yer Blues" and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy".
"It was great but also too quick. Everything was done overnight. John called
me on the morning and asked me if I had something scheduled on that day. I said
I didn't, so he required me to join them at the airport and to go to Canda.
We repeated a few in the first class compartments. We hadn't left the airplane
we were on stage."
Witness of this special night "Live Piece in Toronto" which comes in
November 1969. At its publication, EC is on tour with Blind Faith and Delaney
and Bonnie as shown on "Delaney and Bonnie
on tour with E.C".
A result of their friendship, Delaney and Bonnie produce the first album of EC, so called "Eric Clapton" in July 1970. For the first time in his career, EC is not only a guitarist but also the masterpiece of the album at 100%. He co-signs 8 of the 11 songs. Of course he signs but also catch over for the time a song of J.J. Cale : "After Midnight".
Now EC wants to set up his own group, but he doesn't yet assume his status of rock star, he avoids to use his name. He produces himself for a public charity concert in London under the nickname of Derek and The Dominos.
With Derek and The Dominos, EC is musically satisfied. He
sings what he wants and plays solos when he wants.
. But in a private point of view, he is really sad : he is found of Pattie Boyd
(love which will be publicly come out in 1974 during an interview for the Rolling
Stone magazine), the wife of his best friend George Harrison. EC flies to Miami
and with the participation of Duane Allman for the slide guitar, he records
at the Criteria Studios "Layla and other assorted
love songs" which appears in November 1970. This album becomes a legend
thanks to the song "Layla", the story
of his impossible love. Story commented 28 years later by EC as :
"It is a love song. I wrote it for a woman I loved, but who was married
with another man. It is for this reason I renamed her (it) in order that she
won't be recognized. The long part which closes the song is the work of Jim
Gordon. We appreciated this instrumental, and put it there, just for experimental
use."
The experience of Derek and The Dominos stops in April 1971. But the myth didn't die so quickly : it has been maintained with the live album "Live in concert" " (published in 1973), and more recently with the reemission of "Layla" in a box-set, upgraded by unreleased songs and several jump sessions.
