1973 : the mystical year

In 1973, Pet Towsend organizes a night in order to bring EC back on stage. It had resulted the album "Eric Clapton's rainbow concert" on September 1973.

EC re-found the health (even if is still alcohol addicted) and his musical activities restart. In Spring 1973, he records in Miami "461 Ocean Boulevard", his big album of his come back. On September 1973, his transcription of "I shot the sheriff" is number 1 in the USA (number 9 in UK) and becomes a world wide hit, the beginning of the recognition of reggae and Bob Marley. EC has the critical ear and commercial success again. Monopolized by the composition, the lyrics, the melody, he seems to let aside this work of guitarist which has made his reputation until there. But for EC, it is doubtless, he stays a guitarist before all :

"To sing is still for me, and yet at this level, an hobby more than a job. I think I can play with anyone without problem, but to sing is another challenge when we think to singers who exist or have already existed, I am not in the same game as them. Not at all! There were periods where I absolutely refused to sing."
