ERIC CLAPTON SELLS OUT
LEE : "THE GUY ARRIVED IN TEXAS WITH this guitar - Ronnie Prolor, a really nice guy and a good friend over the years. He said, 'I've got this Explorer, do you think Eric would be interested?' It was just before the $10,000 Les Paul, at the time when you couldn't really give Explorers and Flying Vees away. Eric used that guitar on the ARMS tour for multiple sclerosis and there are well-known pictures of him using it. People often ask me if that's the same Explorer that he used in the '70s, but if you know your guitars you'll remember that
one had a large chunk out of it - which or the work of ton, I might add! "It's a nice player. I put some vintage replacement machineheads on it, because the originals were a bit loose - they're stored in the case though - and there's a slight crack in the body, but it's never moved. People who've played it, who like Explorers, say it's a great one."
RICHARD : "ONLY 19 of these guitars were shipped in 1958 and three in 1959; the rest were shipped in the early'60s but no-one's really clear on exactly how many were made. The general view is that Gibson made one batch, which some say is around 30 and others believe is around 40. Eric bought this in the early'80s and this one's got incredible sustain; it's a big, heavy instrument, but it's in great condition for its age."
