ERIC CLAPTON SELLS OUT

GIBSON ES350T 1956

Estimate $15,000 to $20,000

LEE : "I BELIEVE THE ES350T WAS originally intended as a lower-priced Byrdland, and this one is one of my favourites. Acoustically it's just brilliant. Eric bought it just before we did Keith Richards' ' Hail Hail Rock And Roll' show for Chuck Berry. It was the same time that we acquired the 1958 tweed Fender Twin which Eric still uses from time to time.

'It was a real 11th hour thing : the guitar arrived and I put new strings on it and I think a red strap too. I've got a great shot of him playing it, with Keith and Chuck and everyone else there. Eric thought that when Chuck came on stage he would notice that he'd had gone to the trouble of getting the same guitar that he was so famous for using, but Chuck just walked on and didn't say a thing. He did buy another one, with humbuckers, a kind of cross between a cherry and a tobacco sunburst. I took it down his house two or three months after bought it; he was going to Ronnie Wood's birthday party and decided to give it to Ronnie as a present. Couldn't go to a nicer man."

RICHARD : "THE ES350T WAS ONE of the first thinline guitars, but Gibson designed it with a narrow neck so itd be very easy to play. But ironically it had a lot of resonance and ended up as a rocleifrofl guitar - it had a very thin, bright sound. Because of the narrow neck, some have pickups with the polepieces closer together than on normal Gibsons. This one's in incredible flamed maple."
