EC guests with "No Stiletto Shoes"
22/02/2001

Friday 20th December at Dunsfold Village Hall in the depths of Surrey, Eric turned up unannounced to play with his old friends Gary Brooker, Andy Fairweather Low, Henry Spinetti and Dave Bronze in their occasional band, No Stiletto Shoes.

Although he remained seated throughout much of the set, Eric contributed some lovely guitar work, most notably on "Five Long Years" and "Gin House".

EC on new album of The Crusaders
20/12/2002
Verve Records will release Rural Renewal, a brand-new recording from The Crusaders. Now reunited after a 20-year absence, The Crusaders have crafted an album that is a testament to their enduring influence, creativity, and talent.

Rural Renewal features the heart of the original Crusaders lineup-Joe Sample on keys, Wilton Felder on saxophone, and Stix Hooper on drums-along with trombonist Steve Baxter, who now stands in Wayne Henderson's former spot. Also on board for the 11 tracks of this new journey is Stewart Levine, the producer credited for The Crusaders' major successes in the 1960s and 1970s.

It would be an understatement to call the album's guests "special." The one-and-only Eric Clapton plays guitar here on two songs-the opening title track and the Sample-written "Creepin'." Some of the biggest names in gospel-the great Donnie McClurkin and the powerful Sounds of Blackness-bring the spirit to the Rural Renewal. McClurkin's inimitable vocals are heard on "Sing the Song," while he and Sounds of Blackness transform "A Healing Coming On" into a full-scale jazz/funk/gospel extravaganza. Both songs were written by Sample and famed lyricist Will Jennings.

Rural Renewal is rounded out by additional compositions from Sample ("The Territory," "Viva De Funk"), Wilton Felder (the closing "Goin' Home" and "Heartland"), and Stix Hooper ("Greasy Spoon"). In addition to The Crusaders, Rural Renewal also includes the musical contributions of guitarists Ray Parker, Jr., Arthur Adams, and Dean Parks, bassist Freddie Washington, and percussionist Lenny Castro.

Producer Who Had Role on 'Layla' Dead
12/11/2002

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tom Dowd, a legendary record producer and engineer who worked with Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton , and a host of other stars spanning jazz, soul and rock over 50 years, has died in south Florida at age 77.
Among the numerous hits he had a hand in was Derek and the Dominos' "Layla," the rock classic featuring the dueling guitars of Clapton and the late Duane Allman.
Dowd died on Sunday morning at a nursing home in Aventura after fighting a respiratory disease for two years, his daughter, Dana Dowd, said.
"His contribution to music was immense. He covered so many genres over so many years and touched so many lives. He loved what he did," she said.
Dowd worked at Atlantic records for more than 20 years before becoming a sought-after independent producer in the mid-1960s. The roster of artists he recorded with included jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, engineering "Giant Steps" and "My Favorite Things," and Charles Mingus.
Soul diva Franklin was one of his personal favorites. Among the hits he helped her create was "Respect." He recorded other black artists such as Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Otis Redding and James Brown in Florida and Memphis for Atlantic.
His relationship with Clapton was one of his most enduring, lasting from the British guitarist's days with Cream through Derek and the Dominos and his later solo successes. Clapton called him "the ideal recording man" in a 1996 interview.
He also produced the Allman Brothers Band in the southern rockers' heyday. Their "Live at Fillmore East" was probably the recording he liked most that he had worked on, he told Reuters in 2000.
Dowd, who worked out of the famed Criteria Studios in Miami for many years, also recorded Neil Young , Rod Stewart and Lynyrd Skynyrd, including the ill-fated band's anthem "Freebird."
He was considered a pioneer in the studio and is credited with introducing the first eight-track recording machine into a major studio in 1957.
In later years, he lamented what he thought was the sorry state of the modern pop music industry he saw as lacking in real talent and overly driven by commercial interests.
He was recently honored with a National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award.

ERIC CLAPTON LIVE DOUBLE CD AND DVD "ONE MORE CAR, ONE MORE RIDER" TO BE RELEASED NOVEMBER 5th

"One More Car, One More Rider", a new double CD and DVD from Eric Clapton, will be released on November 5 on Reprise/Duck Records. This is Clapton's first live CD since his 1992 multiple Grammy-Award winning "Unplugged" and it features songs performed during his worldwide 2001 concert tour. The DVD was recorded live at Clapton's sold-out concerts in Los Angeles. The CD was recorded in both Los Angeles and Tokyo. "One More Car, One More Rider" will be available in three configurations, as a double CD, as a DVD and as a Combo-Pak (double CD and DVD).

"One More Car, One More Rider" features 19 tracks and includes several Clapton classics such as "Key To The Highway," "Tears In Heaven," "Badge," "Bell Bottom Blues," "Change The World," "Layla," "Wonderful Tonight," and "Cocaine." In addition, Eric performs Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg's timeless Oscar-winning song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," originally written for the 1939 motion picture "Wizard Of Oz."

The title of the CD/DVD comes from a fairground ride barker. Eric heard the man calling out, repeatedly, "One more car, one more rider!" to fill the last seat in the last car available for each ride. Liking the rhythm and sound, Clapton decided to use the words as the title of this double CD and DVD

Produced by Eric Clapton and Simon Climie "One More Car, One More Rider" features Eric's touring band members Nathan East (bass and backing vocals), Steve Gadd (drums), Andy Fairweather Low (guitar and backing vocals), Greg Phillinganes and Billy Preston (Hammond organ and keyboards), and David Sancious (keyboards and guitar).
